A 0.8% agarose gel with a λ DNA / HindIII ladder in the first lane, labeled in kb from 23.1 kb to 0.125 kb, then uncut λ DNA and λ DNA cut with EcoRI and with BamHI. A ruler in cm and mm runs beside the gel, with 0 at the bottom of the wells, so students can measure how far each band ran and plot a standard curve from the ladder. The largest pieces crowd together near the wells, and in the EcoRI and BamHI lanes, fragments too close in size to separate on this gel run together as thicker bands.
