AP Biology dialysis tubing bag with glucose and starch

An example figure from the Osmosis and Tonicity generator.

A dialysis tubing bag tied to a rod, in a beaker of pure water, holding white glucose particles and a dark starch particle among blue water particles; water arrows point into the bag and a dashed arrow labeled glucose points out of it; then an arrow to the same bag swollen larger, with glucose particles now on both sides and the starch still inside
A dialysis tubing bag holding 15% glucose and 3% starch, in a beaker of pure water. Glucose is small enough to cross the tubing, so it moves out of the bag until its concentration is the same on both sides; starch can’t cross, so the beaker is hypotonic to the bag and water moves in. On the right the bag has swollen, with glucose on both sides and the starch still inside.

Answer key

  • The beaker is hypotonic to the bag
  • Net water movement into the bag
  • Glucose moves out of the bag until equal
  • The bag gains water and swells
