U-tube osmosis: sucrose solution and water, before and after

An example figure from the Osmosis and Tonicity generator.

A U-tube with a selectively permeable membrane at the bottom: side A holds 10% sucrose with gray sucrose particles and fewer blue water particles, side B holds pure water, the levels equal, with a water arrow from side B across the membrane to side A; then an arrow to the same U-tube with the level higher on side A and lower on side B
A U-tube split at the bottom by a selectively permeable membrane, with 10% sucrose on side A and pure water on side B, the levels equal at the start. Sucrose can’t cross the membrane, so side A is hypertonic and water moves by osmosis from side B to side A. On the right the level has risen on side A and fallen on side B.

Answer key

  • Side A is hypertonic to side B
  • Net water movement from side B to side A
  • The level rises on side A
