DNA complementary strand worksheet: draw the other half

An example figure from the DNA and Protein Synthesis generator.

A DNA coding strand 5′ ATG CGT ACC TTA GGC ATA 3′ in boxes, with a row of 18 empty boxes under it labeled DNA template strand, running 3′ to 5′, for students to write the complementary bases in
Half a DNA molecule for students to complete: the coding strand is written in, 5′ to 3′, and the template strand under it is left as empty boxes. Students pair each base, A with T and G with C, and see from the 5′ and 3′ labels that the two strands run in opposite directions. The answer key gives the template strand, 3′-TAC GCA TGG AAT CCG TAT-5′.

Answer key

  • DNA coding strand: 5′-ATG CGT ACC TTA GGC ATA-3′
  • DNA template strand: 3′-TAC GCA TGG AAT CCG TAT-5′
