CO₂ and O₂ concentration around a plant in the light and then the dark

An example figure from the Photosynthesis Rate generator.

Graph against time in minutes, 0 to 60, on a grid, with CO₂ concentration (%) on the left axis and O₂ concentration (%) on the right: in the first 30 minutes, unshaded and labeled Light, the solid blue CO₂ line falls from 0.04 % toward 0.01 % while the dashed red O₂ line rises from 21 % to about 21.03 %; in the shaded half labeled Dark, CO₂ rises and O₂ falls in straight lines
The CO₂ (solid blue, left axis) and O₂ (dashed red, right axis) in a closed chamber around a plant in bright light for 30 minutes, then in the dark, shaded. In the light, photosynthesis takes in CO₂ and gives off O₂ faster than respiration does the opposite, so the CO₂ falls and the O₂ rises by the same amount, both levelling off. In the dark the plant only respires: the CO₂ rises and the O₂ falls in straight lines.

Answer key

  • In the light, CO₂ falls from 0.04 % to 0.01 %, and O₂ rises by the same, to 21.03 %
  • In the dark, from 30 minutes, CO₂ rises and O₂ falls in straight lines: respiration only
