Rate of photosynthesis against CO₂ concentration at high and low light intensity

An example figure from the Photosynthesis Rate generator.

Graph of rate of photosynthesis against CO₂ concentration (%) with no numbers on the axes: two curves rising together, the dashed red low light intensity curve levelling off early and low and the solid blue high light intensity curve rising further and levelling off about twice as high, with a key under the graph
The rate of photosynthesis against CO₂ concentration at a high light intensity (solid blue) and a low one (dashed red), both at 25 °C. At first more CO₂ speeds photosynthesis up whatever the light, so the curves rise together. Then each levels off where light becomes the limiting factor, the dimly lit plant at a much lower rate and lower CO₂ concentration.

Answer key

  • High light intensity: CO₂ is limiting up to about 0.33 %, then the rate levels off at 15
  • Low light intensity: CO₂ is limiting up to about 0.065 %, then the rate levels off at 7.5
