Competitive and non-competitive inhibitor graph (rate against substrate concentration)

An example figure from the Enzyme Activity generator.

Graph of rate of reaction against substrate concentration with no numbers on the axes: three curves rising and levelling off, no inhibitor (solid blue), a competitive inhibitor (dashed red) reaching the same Vmax more slowly, and a non-competitive inhibitor (dotted green) levelling off at a lower Vmax, with dashed Vmax lines labeled Vmax and Vmax (non-competitive) at the y-axis and a key under the graph
The rate of reaction against substrate concentration for an enzyme on its own (solid blue), with a competitive inhibitor (dashed red) and with a non-competitive inhibitor (dotted green), drawn as Michaelis–Menten curves. With a competitive inhibitor the rate climbs more slowly but reaches the same Vmax, since enough substrate outcompetes it; with a non-competitive inhibitor it levels off at a lower Vmax. Dashed lines across mark each Vmax, labeled at the y-axis: the enzyme’s own, which the competitive inhibitor shares, and the non-competitive inhibitor’s.

Answer key

  • No inhibitor: Vmax and Km of the enzyme on its own
  • Competitive inhibitor: the same Vmax, and Km 2.5 times higher
  • Non-competitive inhibitor: Vmax 2.5 times lower, and the same Km
